I worked hard to come up with unique things for John this Christmas. He's always been fascinated by time and by timepieces, so when I found a digital sundial, I had to get it! Click on the image to view the time (1:20 PM) a bit more clearly.
It's a deceptively simple device. The package contains three disks: one clear plastic, one mirror, and one with a precision-made diffraction grating created for your latitude. You put the disks together with a provided metal bracket, set it in a south-facing window, and adjust the angle of the diffraction grating until the time is just right. No power, no batteries - just sunlight.
Check them out at Digital Sundials International - The Digital Sundial. They have the small home version that I bought and a much larger outdoor model. When you order you'll provide your location so they can create a grating for you.
